Niacin, also known as Vitamin B3, is one of the B vitamins and is named because it is the third vitamin B discovered.
Niacin can reduce the body's fat content by blocking the breakdown of fat in adipose tissue. These lipids are used to produce very-low-density lipoproteins (VLDLs) in the liver, which in turn become the source of low-density lipoprotein (LDL) or "bad" cholesterol.
Preventing the degradation of these fats leads to a decrease in fatty acid content in the blood. This reduces the amount of very-low-density cholesterol and lipoprotein (VLDL), which increases the amount of high-density lipoprotein or "good" cholesterol produced in the liver and prevents arteriosclerosis. In the liver, niacin is made from the amino acid tryptophan.
Vitamin B3 deficiency in the diet leads to Pellagra, a type of vitamin deficiency caused by severe skin problems such as dermatitis and damage to the neck and other parts of the body, as well as other symptoms such as dementia, diarrhea and, even worse, death.
It is believed that niacin is effective in patients with Parkinson's disease. It is a critical component in the production of nicotinamide adenine dinucleotide (NAD). During metabolism, nicotinamide is released, which protects the body from Parkinson's disease.

The other two forms of niacin are nicotinamide and inositol hexane nicotinate. Nicotinamide, also called niacinamide, has similar functions to niacin but does not have the toxic properties of niacin. Another form of niacin is inositol hexane nicotinate(IHN), which is commonly sold as a dietary supplement.
